Still Day 11 Jurien Bay, WA
After a freezing fun swim with Australian sea lions, I returned to the hotel around 11 am. I indulged in the longest hot shower. Not wanting to waste any time, I decided to drive a bit north towards Green Head. Although I wanted to find the beach where I took a stunning sunset picture 15 years ago, featuring a huge rock with a hole, I had no clue where it was, so I didn't bother trying to locate it.
However, a captain on the boat had suggested Point Louise if I was looking for a white sand beach. So, I punched in Point Louise on my GPS and hit the road. As I was driving along a tiny road, I noticed a sign for "Window Rock." Initially, I passed it, but then I changed my mind. Since I was already there, I figured I might as well take a look.
And guess what? Haha, I stumbled upon the very beach where I took that unforgettable sunset picture with the massive rock 15 years ago! Wow, talk about a stroke of luck. The place wasn't as exciting without the sunset, but I was still thrilled to have found it!
Point Louise didn't quite impress me, but the tiny road leading there had plenty of places to stop and admire the pure white sand—the kind I had been searching for in Western Australia. I made a few stops for photos on my way back to Jurien Bay. By now, it was past noon, and I hadn't eaten anything all morning. I was starving, so it was definitely time to head back to Jurien Bay and grab something to eat before I passed out from hunger, haha.
You might be wondering why I haven't mentioned any food places on this trip. Well, that's because I didn't eat much during this journey. In the morning, I usually just drank soup that I brought from Hawaii. For lunch, I either ate on the boat or grabbed some snacks from a gas station and kept driving. By dinnertime, I was usually too tired to go out, so I just ate whatever snacks I had on hand and went to sleep. I only went to a restaurant a few times during my three-week trip, so I can't really say much about restaurants. However, here are some must-try foods in Australia.
-
Meat pie and sausage roll with tomato sauce. Even some gas stations have homemade ones or go to a cafe or bakery.
-
I didn't have to say, but fish and chips. I would ask if they are using fresh fish or frozen fish. If it's frozen fish, I would pass because there are tons of fish and chip places; someone should have fresh fish.
-
Laksa. I miss Laksa! When I was living in Cairns, Australia, I didn't even look for it, there is laksa every where but in Hawaii, no one has Laksa. I think it's Southeast Asian food. It's like a spicy coconut soup noodle. You should try it!
-
Kebab. There are also a lot of kebab small shops in Cairns and I was always eating after bar popping lol but not in Hawaii. So when I go to Australia, it's a must-eat item for me. It's Mediterranean food. It's like a burrito but way better. Meat and salad wrap, no beans.
-
Chocolate lover? You must get Tim Tam. Go to any supermarket and find it. Actually, even KitKat is better than the US ones. Hot chocolate in the USA tastes like sugar; in Australia or New Zealand, you taste chocolate.
Anyway when I was at the beach cafe, enjoying fish and chips, I met local ladies who we met on the boat this morning. They asked me if I wanted to come with them to the cave they are going to visit, where access is only with 4WD. I was like, why not!
Karla and Beth, both locals living close to Perth. I was very impressed with the driving technique Karla has. The road to the Stockyard Gully Cave was a sandy, bumpy road, and she drove like 40 miles/hour. I probably could drive 15 miles/hour even if I drove a 4WD. It was FUN! That was the first time I experienced real Aussie driving, thank you Karla!
If you don't have 4WD, I do not recommend going to this cave.
While Karla was driving home, I received a phone call from the Sea lion boat tour that I had booked for tomorrow. They said they needed to cancel due to not having enough guests tomorrow morning, and they asked me if I could change to 10 am instead of 7:30 am. I wanted to try it, but if I missed the flight, I might miss the whole Victoria trip ahead. So I passed and canceled the second sea lion tour. Bummer! But I was kind of relieved I didn't have to be in 64F water tomorrow morning again.
